Montana Strait Racing
About me, and my last year of driving
I have been into cars ever since I was super young. My dad being a mechanic was a big influence. I would hang out in the garage while he would fix other people's cars and we would just kinda hang out there all the time! From this early start, It was no surprise that when I got my first car, I instantly started tinkering and changing things to make it cooler (or 'my own')! Through my teens and early twenties, I raced in many forms of MotorSports from ice racing to autoX. These were fun (and still are), but as soon as I discovered drifting, I was hooked. Maybe it's all those stunt-man genes in my family, but I found myself and my style in drifting. Simply stated - drifting is so awesome!!!
After a few years and many cars, I have finally got a car that is "cool" and fits me and my style very well. It's a car I built to be on track (versus a car to be driven as a street car). In spring of 2015 the car was complete and I was able to put some photos on social media. My friends, and friends' friends started liking and sharing the photos. A few days later I drove ClubFR's Drift Day 51 (DD51), and it was great! When media came in from the event it created a "boom" for me in the last few months I have tripled my Facebook followers (almost 3000) and more than doubled my Instagram followers (800) and they are both growing on a daily basis!
For the 2016 season, I plan to make it to all of the ClubFR events (USAir raceway) as well as some Slide Society events (Dells Raceway) pending 2016 schedules.
These events are all grassroots style events, which I love driving. You get tons of seat time, there is always lots of media, and the drivers that show up have a sense of camaraderie; we are all there to have fun and push each other to be more awesome!!! Grassroots events are all about the connection between car and driver It's about developing skills, defining style, and gaining a true understanding of the sport of drifting.
How did i first discover drifting?
Back in the day in the late 90's they played WRC (World Rally Championship) replays on The Speed Channel super late at night, at like 2-4AM and i would stay up late and watch Sebastian Lobe in his Citron, and Colin McRae in his Subaru rip through mountain roads in the dirt, snow and tarmac with great style and speed and i always wanted to do this myself.
What is drifting to me?
having fun with friends on and off the track with our cool cars.
If i could drift with anyone in the world who would it be?
Keiichi Tsuchiya all the way! it would be amazing to drive with him in the touge in japan.
Why do I like grass roots drifting?
its awesome! you can show up with a car wether its relatively stock or a car that is FD ready car and go out and have a blast! it is also awesome for those who don't have much skill, there are plenty of other drivers and staff at these drift days that are willing to help you grow as a driver.
My AE86 Corolla
I have a 1984 Toyota Corolla SR-5 'barn find'. The owner did not have time to give it any love so it ended up sitting behind a barn for about 7 years in northwestern Wisconsin. I got in contact with him and we worked out a deal...we would pick the car up and trailer it back to the cities with an additional pickup to haul all of the "extra pieces". It was a huge project! Looking back, I was totally unprepared for the amount of work, but the process has been transformative for both me and the car. I built it from the ground up with help from friends and a very supportive wife. The car now has a 4ag in it from an AW11 MR2 that has been built (7rib block, GZE Pistons, small port head and bluetop cams) along with a S13 Garrett T25 turbo running 7PSI, along with its aero kit it also has a flashy "bass boat" style sparkly wrap that catches eyes where ever I bring the car!
